TEN people died when a Honda Fit collided head-on with a Toyota Noah as the driver of the Honda allegedly fled from a police roadblock in Zvishavane yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses said a Honda Fit that was travelling to Zvishavane along Masvingo-Mbalabala Road failed to stop at a police roadblock near Zvishavane aerodrome.

All six people in the Honda fit died on the spot after the vehicle burst into flames on impact.

All the passengers were burnt beyond recognition.

Two who were in the Toyota Noah also died on the spot while another two died on admission to hospital.

Just after travelling about 300 metres from the roadblock, said a witness, the Honda Fit driver encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Toyota Noah.

The Honda then burst into flames and six people in the vehicle were burnt to death.

The accident occurred about 93km along Masvingo-Mbalabala road at around 1.30PM.

The Toyota Noah had eight people on board.

Two people, a male juvenile and a female passenger who is believed to be the mother in-law of the driver, died, said a police source.

“The Zvishavane Fire brigade arrived at the scene early but could do nothing as the Honda Fit was reduced to a shell in minutes. A number of onlookers quickly left the scene as they could not stand the gruesome accident,” said a witness who declined to be named.

The driver of the Noah and two other passengers survived and were rushed to Zvishavane District Hospital.

Officer Commanding Zvishavane District, Chief Superintendent Edward Ncube confirmed the accident. “I can confirm that 10 people perished yesterday after the driver refused to stop at a roadblock,” said Chief Supt Ncube. By Paul Mundandi. source chronicle
